AFoCO showcased the history and cooperation model in the forest sector at the 2019 ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit held on 25-27 November 2019 at Busan.

Since the initial phase jointly led by ASEAN and Korea, various local actions are carried out in all ASEAN Members under 27 projects with funds of 25 million USD, targeted at the five strategic priority areas of forest restoration, climate change adaptation, capacity development. In over 30 project sites, more than 4,500 ha of forest are restored and managed.

To address the needs of capacity development in the forest sector, AFoCO established the Regional Education and Training Center and benefitted more than 5,000 participants this year alone. In addition, 35 young forest professionals of ASEAN participated in the scholarship and long-term programs.

In terms of peace and safety, participatory approaches empowering the local communities, and activities on forest fire and disaster management contribute to reducing challenges and conflicts faced in the forest sector. Activities are also implemented for local community livelihood, forest restoration, research and development in genetic resources, among others, to promote prosperity through the forest sector.
