Mr. Chencho Norbu
Mr. Chencho Norbu started his professional career as a field project manager in Bhutan and has served more than 30 years in various important posts – Director, Department of Agriculture (2007-2011), Director General, Department of Forest and Parks Services (2012-2015) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests; Secretary to the National Environment Commission from 2016 to 2017; and the Government Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement in 2018 before joining AFoCO Secretariat team in January 2019.
Mr. Norbu has led Bhutan’s delegation to the Conference of Parties of UNCCD from 2006 through 2013. During this period, he was the Chair of CRIC (Committee for Review and Implementation of the Convention) of UNCCD in 2010 and 2011. The Mid-Term Evaluation of the 10 Year Strategy of UNCCD was carried out in 2012 under his chairmanship, through the Inter-sessional Working Group (IWG). He also served as the Chair of the Committee of Whole (COW) of COP 11 held in Namibia, 2013. In addition to scientific paper publications, he also served as one of the Lead Coordinating Authors of Chapter 7 – The impact of soil change on ecosystem services, Status of the World’s Soil Resources Report, ITPS 2015, FAO, Rome; as a Review Editor of Chapter 4 – Status and trends of land degradation and restoration and associated changes in biodiversity and ecosystems, IPBES Land Degradation and Restoration Assessment Report, 2017; and was nominated as one of the members of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) from the Asia-Pacific Region, hosted by FAO, Rome, in 2018. He holds a masters degree in Soil Science from Cornell University (Ithaca, US).
