AFoCO Scholar Graduates from Yeungnam University

AFoCO held the 2019 Scholarship Certificate Ceremony for the recipients of the AFoCO Landmark Scholarship Program on 23 August. The Certificate Ceremony was a celebration of our scholarship recipients, their accomplishments, and their future successes. The event took place at the AFoCO Secretariat’s office.

We were honored to give out a Certificate of Completion to Ms. Su Yi Hnin, who completed her Master’s degree in Forest Resources and Ecological Restoration at Yeungnam University. Ms. Su Yi Hnin commenced her academic journey in 2018 and is the 8th Scholar to graduate from the Scholarship Program. Congratulations on this great achievement!

“What I have learned during my Master’s program is important not only to me but my to my country as well. I hope to share new knowledge and experiences with my department when I return. My time in Korea was a life-changing experience, and I could never have imagined learning so much about forestry. I was also able to make many friends from different countries and learn about different cultures and traditions.”
– Su Yi Hnin (MSc Graduate, Yeungnam University PSPS)

Since 2015, the AFoCO Landmark Scholarship Program has been supporting outstanding scholars from ASEAN Member States in their pursuit of higher education in universities in the Republic of Korea. The Scholarship Program has been a key aspect of AFoCO’s commitment to strengthening capacity in its member countries and nurturing future leaders in the region’s forestry sector.

For the 2019 Scholarship Program, the organization awarded scholarships to three scholarship recipients – Ms. Ei Sandi Sett from Myanmar (PhD course), Mr. Phayvanh Alounsavath from Lao PDR (PhD course), and Mr. Nur Syamsi Muhammad from Indonesia (MSc course). Mr. Nur Syamsi Muhammad is currently in his third semester of studies at Yeungnam University and is excited to begin his research on ecotourism activities in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Ms. Ei Sandi Sett and Mr. Alounsavath will begin their studies this semester at Seoul National University and Chungnam National University respectively.

“I hope to increase my knowledge and capabilities to effectively synergize and collaborate with forest stakeholders and other competing sectors such as the mining and palm oil plantation, which contribute to deforestation in the region of Kalimantan. By doing so, I hope to create a collaborative management system to ensure sustainable forest utilization.”
– Nur Syamsi Muhammad (MSc Program, Yeungnam University PSPS)

The Certificate Ceremony was followed by a Q&A session on the Scholarship Program’s regulations and academic progress presentations by current Scholars.
