Regional Collaboration on Forest Fire Management: AFoCO organized the Regional Workshop of the AFFIRM Workshop in Cambodia

AFoCO, in collaboration with FAO and participating member countries, successfully held the 2nd Regional Workshop of the AFFIRM Project in Siem Reap, Cambodia, from July 1–3, 2025. The event brought together over 30 participants from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, Viet Nam, and partner organizations to share progress and challenges in forest fire management and explore integrated fire management strategies.

The opening session featured remarks from Cambodia’s Forestry Administration, FAO, emphasizing the growing threat of wildfires, the importance of regional cooperation, and the need for a proactive, inclusive, and data-driven approach to fire management. Workshop sessions included national progress updates, technical presentations, and in-depth discussions on pilot activities, governance mechanisms, early warning systems, and community-based fire management. The Global Fire Management Hub, introduced by FAO, was highlighted as a key platform for promoting integrated fire management and sharing global best practices. AFoCO presented its regional initiatives, including ICT-based pilot projects and capacity-building programs.

The workshop concluded with a regional discussion focusing on harmonizing technical approaches, enhancing community engagement, and identifying sustainable financing mechanisms. Participants emphasized the need for cross-sectoral collaboration, strategic planning, and local empowerment to address the complex drivers of fire across the region. This regional workshop reaffirmed AFFIRM’s commitment to fostering collaboration, scaling effective practices, and building resilient landscapes and communities. AFoCO extends its appreciation to all participants and partners for their active engagement and contributions.
