Policymakers learn more about resource mobilization to accelerate forestry projects

5-7 November 2019, AFoCO RETC, Myanmar

Since its entry into force as an intergovernmental organization in 2018, AFoCO has been actively pursuing new projects and initiatives to contribute towards local and global forestry goals such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the mitigation of climate change impacts. In order to expand its portfolio of projects across Asia and strengthen its global positioning in the forestry sector, it is critical that the organization secures additional funds and diversify its funding sources. As part of the process of seeking and gathering financial contributions, fundraising has been considered as an important aspect for non-profit organizations to obtain funds necessary for their operations. AFoCO plans to conduct fundraising activities by working with partner organizations and international organizations around the world.

The workshop held at the AFoCO RETC between 5 and 7 November aimed to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of resource mobilization strategies to meet the project development needs of member countries. The three-day course was attended by 14 high-level government officials from eight member countries and consisted of presentations and discussions on co-financing strategies and joint project development.

“AFoCO will seek diverse sources of funding and consider developing a strategy for the operation of the AFoCO RETC under the guidance of the Ministerial Meeting on 30 October 2019 in Seoul, Korea. This workshop is a good venue to discuss relevant topics and share valuable information on fund mobilization,” says Mr. Chencho Norbu, Executive Director of AFoCO.

Experts from partner organizations such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF), Asia Forest Institute (AFI), Climate Forestry and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) shared knowledge on project development through the formulation of co-financed projects and resources mobilization through co-financing mechanisms. The workshop provided an opportunity to strengthen networks with other organizations and to exchange knowledge and experiences on project development, resource mobilization, and funding-raising strategies.
