Tree Planting on the First Acquired Buffer-Zone Land: AFoCO–Mapletree Partnership at the Korea National Arboretum

On September 30, 2025, AFoCO held a tree planting event in Gwangneung Forest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, in collaboration with Mapletree Korea, Korea National Arboretum (KNA), and IFSA Korea. Recognized as one of the richest forest ecosystems in South Korea, Gwangneung Forest was designated in 2010 for its outstanding biodiversity, and the KNA has launched a long-term program to purchase buffer zone lands and restore them through tree planting. This event marked the first tree planting on a newly acquired buffer zone land.

The event began with an introduction of Gwangneung Forest by the KNA staff. Mr. Youngseok Lim, Director General of the Korea National Arboretum, delivered welcoming remarks, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the ecological integrity of Gwangneung Forest.

As part of the FAAF, Mapletree supported the tree planting activity, while AFoCO staff, IFSA students, and KNA staff worked side by side to plant 335 linden trees (Tilia amurensis Rupr.) across a 0.1 ha site. Linden trees are a significant melliferous species favored by honeybees, providing nectar resources and thereby supporting pollinator habitats and enhancing biodiversity conservation.

This event also marked the first joint activity between AFoCO and IFSA Korea, symbolizing stronger youth engagement in regional forestry initiatives. By planting linden trees in this strategically important buffer zone, the initiative contributes to ecosystem restoration and highlights the role of public private partnerships in tackling global biodiversity and climate challenges.

Through this collaboration, AFoCO, Mapletree, IFSA-Korea and the Korea National Arboretum demonstrated a public-private partnership model that combines corporate support, institutional expertise, and youth participation, contributing to forest conservation and sustainable development for future generations.
