Myanmar’s forestry sector is undergoing a transition toward a more restoration- and conservation-oriented management framework as the country faces continued deforestation and forest degradation. Declining forest cover, particularly outside the Permanent Forest Estate, along with ongoing land-use pressures, has made forest restoration and protection a national priority. In response, the government has set a national target to increase forest cover to 50 percent by 2035 through forest restoration, plantation development, expansion of protected areas, and strengthened community participation, reflecting a broader strategy to restore forest landscapes while supporting environmental stability and rural livelihoods.
