The UNCBD COP15 concluded with the endorsement of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) in December 2022, uniting 196 nations toward biodiversity conservation and restoration by 2030, outlining four ambitious goals and 23 targets. The forestry sector aligns with the KM-GBF’s objectives, aiming for the effective restoration of degraded areas, enhancement of ecosystem functions, species preservation, sustainable land management, and more. The framework emphasizes capacity building, scientific collaboration, and equitable knowledge sharing for implementation.

Highlighting the need for nature-positive financial flows, COP15 urged business engagement, acknowledging that only a small percentage of companies assess their environmental impacts. Transparent processes and science-based indicators are essential for diverse funding opportunities. National Biodiversity Strategic Action Plans (NBSAPs) and Reports remain pivotal for achieving global biodiversity goals, integrating biodiversity across sectors for informed decision-making. The AFoCO workshop held in June 2023 aimed to explore biodiversity conservation’s current and future directions, providing a foundational resource for member countries to contribute to the KM-GBF’s implementation.

The report was prepared by the AFoCO Regional Education and Training Center for AFoCO Capacity Building Workshop on Forest Biodiversity “Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework: Synergize in Achieving Future Conservation Targets” organized virtually on 13-15 June 2023.
