Building the capacities of policy-makers, technical practitioners and researchers in the forestry sector can help contribute to the sustainable management of forests to address climate change and societal challenges.

AFoCO’s training courses are intended to strengthen the capacities of member countries by enhancing knowledge and understanding of forest management and providing greater access to advanced technologies. Our goal is to empower them to deal with pressing forestry issues in the region and establish networks among member countries to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences. All training courses have been implemented at the AFoCO Regional Education and Training Center (RETC) since it began operations in 2018.  In line with its Strategic Priorities (2019-2023), AFoCO focuses on the implementation of regular training courses based on its 3 core training areas.

Forest Rehabilitation & Reforestation
Seed harvesting, seed storage and supply
nursery management, plantation establishment
Forest Fire Management
Fire safety and behavior, fire prevention, fire inspection,
fire information system, fire suppression
Community-based Forest Management
Accounting, forest assessment & monitoring,
forest resources, forest-related enterprise development

Course Information

Regular Courses

Regular courses are usually organized over a period of 5 days, combining lectures, discussions, practical exercises, and field visits. Each course accommodates between 15-25 participants from forestry departments of member countries. Our Regular Courses are invitation-only courses for government officials who have been nominated by the designated focal officials for AFoCO-related matters in AFoCO member countries.

Community Courses

Community development training courses are organized regularly to provide alternative income sources to sustain local livelihoods by training local people in making handicrafts, furniture, and other products. These community courses aim to help secure livelihoods, support the development of community forest enterprises while reducing pressures on forest resources. In-country community development courses are also being implemented in member countries.

Customized Courses

Customized forestry-related courses on a variety of forestry topics are designed according to the needs of requesting organizations. The training topics, schedule, and duration can be completely personalized in consultation with our team. Customized courses offer a unique international experience for diverse trainee groups and impart knowledge relevant to specific regions or countries.
