E-modules

AFoCO designs virtual training contents to reach out to a wider audience.

AFoCOx or AFoCO e-learning courses are a collaborative program for developing online learning courses with various partners such as research agencies, universities, and international organizations. Through the use of virtual platforms, we aim to respond to the needs of our member countries to improve capacities on project development.

We are on the lookout for partners who are interested in developing diverse virtual modes of capacity building on topics related to forests and forestry. Contact us if you are interested!

AFoCOxSNU Forestry 101

The AFoCOxSNU Forestry 101 aims to provide scientific conceptual background and theories in forests and the forestry sector. In partnership with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of Seoul National University (SNU), this program enhances the linkages of how science-based governance is important through analytical views on critical factors to monumental forest governance of the Republic of Korea (e.g., policies, framework, strategies, etc. at the National level). Each topic consists of three 10-minute modules, the first module is introducing the governance part, while the other two support scientific theories and conceptual backgrounds on the introduced case study of the ROK.

MODULE 1.1
Key factors considered for forest rehabilitation and restoration

MODULE 1.2
Silvicultural considerations for forest restoration

MODULE 1.3
Genetically improved seed and seedling production for forest rehabilitation

MODULE 2.1
Impacts of climate change on forests and the role of forests

MODULE 2.2
Scientific approaches of forests to climate change adaptation

MODULE 2.3
Conservation and utilization of forest genetic resources respond to climate change

AFoCO E-learning module on Integrated Forest Fire Management & Advanced Technologies

In 2021, AFoCO worked with the World Bank and the Korea Forest Service to produce three e-learning modules on forest fire management. The three video clips of about 12-14 minutes each cover the fundamentals and basic principles of forest fire management, approaches used in managing forest fires, and technologies applied in monitoring and managing forest fires. These modules are accessible via the Open Learning Campus (OLC) of the World Bank.

MODULE 1
Fundamentals of Forest Fire Management
provides a basic understanding of forest fire behavior, safety and prevention, and forest fire suppression.

MODULE 2
Forest Fire Management Approaches provides information on the basic approaches to fire management. Depending on the situation, forest fire management authorities can handle forest fires using proven techniques or through community participation. In certain circumstances, the choice is to either suppress fires or let them burn.

MODULE 3
Technology for Forest Fire Management used in the Republic of Korea
discusses the application of advanced technologies in forest fire management, with a focus on the Republic of Korea. This module introduces the National Fire Danger Rating System, helicopter operations, mechanized fire suppression systems, as well as the utilization of big data for forest fire danger forecasting.
