Let’s Forest – Plantree: Successful Afforestation Event in Viet Nam, Sponsored by GLURI and PENTAWORKS

April 2023 – AFoCO Let’s Forest – Plantree afforestation event was successfully held in Ngoc Thanh Commune, Phuc Yen City, Vinh Phuc Province, Vietnam. This initiative, organized in collaboration with AFoCO and the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, received generous sponsorship from two prominent companies from the Republic of Korea, GLURI and PENTAWORKS. The Forest Science Center of North-Eastern Vietnam played a crucial role in preparing the site and ensuring the event’s success.

The objectives of the afforestation event were multifaceted, aiming to create employment opportunities for the local community and establish a demonstration model of Caribbean Pine (Pinus caribaea). By providing jobs related to forest planting and maintenance, the event empowered the community and fostered economic growth. The demonstration model serves as a platform for learning and encourages the replication of sustainable forestry practices. Furthermore, the growth of Caribbean Pine contributes to environmental protection by preventing soil erosion and mitigating the effects of global warming.

The event witnessed the active participation of key stakeholders, including the Department of Science, Technology, and International Cooperation – Vietnam Administration of Forestry, the Forest Protection Department of Phuc Yen City, local government representatives, and enthusiastic community members.

The program commenced with an inspiring opening speech by Mr. Tran Hieu Minh, the Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology, and International Cooperation. Mr. Seonghyeon LEE, representing GLURI, expressed his gratitude for being part of this meaningful initiative. Dr. Bui Trong Thuy, the Deputy Director of the Forest Science Center of North-Eastern Vietnam, delivered an insightful speech, emphasizing the significance of the Caribbean Pine model.

After the speeches, all participants engaged in planting activities, guided by expert staff from the Forest Science Center. Tools and instructions were distributed to ensure proper planting techniques. Throughout the event, reporters and journalists from Vinh Phuc Province conducted interviews with GLURI, amplifying awareness about the initiative and its environmental benefits.

The afforestation event achieved remarkable success, with a total of 1,700 Caribbean Pine trees planted across 1.5 hectares of land. This flourishing model stands as a testament to the potential of sustainable forestry practices. The Forest Science Center of North-Eastern Vietnam has taken responsibility for the care and protection of this model, ensuring its long-term impact in the region.
