A Collaborative Step Towards Forest Fire Resilience
The 2024 AFoCO-French MOFA Science and Technology Exchange Partnership (STEP) Program officially kicked off on November 18, 2024, in France. Co-organized by the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), this five-week training program brings together forestry experts and practitioners for an intensive learning experience aimed at addressing the rising threats of forest fires.
This year STEP Program welcomes participants from Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Thailand, all of whom were carefully selected by their governments as representatives of their nation’s forestry and fire management sectors. These participants are not only seasoned professionals but also key contributors to their countries’ efforts to tackle forest fire challenges. Through this program, they’ll gain the tools, knowledge, and confidence to lead innovations in fire management upon returning home countries.
Bridging Knowledge and Action
The program is structured around four dynamic modules, blending theory with practice:
- Understanding Fire Phenomenon – Delving into the science of fire dynamics and ecosystems
- Risk Forecasting and Prevention – Exploring advanced modeling and prevention strategies
- Integrated Fire Management – Learning collaborative approaches to suppression and recovery
- Filed-Based Training – Applying knowledge in real-world scenarios with hands-on exercises
Participants will spend their time at the University of Montpellier and the Valabre National Forest Fires Education and Research Centre, both renowned for their expertise in fire science. These immersive sessions combine academic instruction with practical drills, offering participants a well-rounded perspective on managing forest fires effectively.
Building Regional Collaboration
One of the program’s standout features is its focus on fostering collaboration among AFoCO Member Countries. By connecting forestry experts across borders, the STEP Program aims to create a platform for knowledge-sharing and mutual learning. The relationships built here will serve as a foundation for long-term regional cooperation in fire management.
This program showcases the strength of AFoCO Member Countries, shared an AFoCO. The participants bring unique perspectives and expertise, and this experience will empower them to develop tailored strategies for their own countries while contributing to regional forest conservation efforts.
Looking Ahead
As forest fires continue to threaten ecosystems and communities, initiatives like the STEP Program highlight the importance of regional collaboration and innovation. With France’s cutting-edge fire management practices and the practical expertise of AFoCO Member Countries, this program is set to make a meaningful impact on the way forest fires are managed in Asia.
The STEP Program isn’t just about learning—it’s about action, collaboration, and creating a sustainable future for forests and the communities that depend on them.
