Goal and Objectives
The goal of the project is to promote reforestation and forest rehabilitation through survey and examination of better access to quality seeds/planting materials of prominent tree species and through the establishment of demonstration models for forest rehabilitation in Cambodia and Viet Nam, involving various stakeholders.
Access to quality seeds/planting materials is a major challenge in these countries due to lack of a proper seed supply and distribution system. With the support of the project, seed sources and their supply chain for economically and ecologically important tree species will be surveyed and established across the countries. Demonstration models for forest rehabilitation will be established. In addition, supporting facilities such as tree seed laboratory and tissue culture laboratory will be established under the project.
Specific objectives
- To initiate a seed distribution system in Cambodia with identified seed sources and seed distributors
- To establish support laboratories with equipment and trained staff in Cambodia and Viet Nam
- To improve seed sources and seedling production in Viet Nam
- To assess the impact of forest rehabilitation on the environment and climate change in Viet Nam
- To establish demonstration models of forest rehabilitation in Cambodia and Viet Nam
Expected Outputs
Upon the completion of the project, Cambodia and Viet Nam will have quality seed sources and seed production areas identified for their national forest rehabilitation programs. The tree seed distribution system will be established including the mechanism to supply seeds from seed sources to end-users. This improved seed support system will benefit various stakeholders such as farmers, local communities, NGOs, international agencies, private companies, government agencies, research institutions, etc. Furthermore, the improved tree seed and tissue culture laboratories in both implementing countries will support to quality enhancement of tree plantations. The demonstration models will show good practices and serve as study sites for future training and sharing of methodologies regarding forest restoration and rehabilitation in other areas or countries. The lessons learned from the project implementation will have a great potential of expanding to other tropical and sub-tropical countries.
