As the first joint initiative of AFoCO, Yuhan Corporation, the National Forest Agency of Mongolia, and the “Billion Trees” Socially Oriented NGO, the “Yuhan 4RE (Resilient, Regenerative & Responsible Reforestation): Restoration of Wildfire-affected Forests in Batsumber” was launched in 30 September 2025. This project will support forest restoration in Batsumber soum, Tuv Aimag. The project addresses the growing impacts of climate change, which have intensified wildfires globally and contributed to significant forest loss in Mongolia. Following the major forest fires of 2013 and 2017, which destroyed more than 100,000 hectares of forest, the need for restoration and resilience has become more urgent than ever.
With support from Yuhan Corporation, the partnership aims to advance Mongolia’s Billion Trees National Movement and strengthen sustainable forest management through a public-private partnership model. Aligned with Tuv aimag’s commitment to plant 20 million trees by 2030, the project will plant locally-sourced seedlings each year over five years, restoring about 75 hectares of fire-damaged forest land in Batsumber soum.
Goals & Objectives
In 2026, the project consists of the following components:
- Restoration of Wildfire-affected Areas: Restoration of at least 15 hectares (36,000 seedlings) of fire-damaged areas in Batsumber soum in line with BTNM and implementation of R&D activities, including long-term ecological monitoring
- Project Advocacy: Organization of public awareness-raising campaigns and training activities involving local community stakeholders and disseminate project outputs through media outreach
Main Activities
- Restoration of Wildfire-affected Areas: A detailed site selection and field assessment process will be conducted to identify a suitable site and planting species for the restoration of at least 15 hectares (36,000 seedlings) of fire-damaged areas in Batsumber soum.
- Project Advocacy: In the first year, this component will involve the organization of a tree-planting campaign and community training in the project site for FUGs and local communities in forest protection and fire prevention, development of advocacy materials, and media outreach
Expected Outputs
- 15 hectares of fire-damaged areas in Batsumber soum restored as a model
- Increased awareness for local communities on the importance of forests
