Bhutan’s forestry sector is gradually shifting from a conservation-focused approach toward a more restoration- and climate-resilient-oriented forest management framework. While forest cover remains high, increasing climate variability, land use change, and rural–urban migration are affecting forest ecosystem conditions and landscape functionality. In response, the Royal Government of Bhutan launched the Restore Bhutan initiative, a national program to restore degraded forests and landscapes while strengthening climate resilience, water security, and sustainable livelihoods, reflecting Bhutan’s broader transition toward active and integrated landscape management.
