Bhutan’s forestry sector is entering a new phase of development, shifting from a model centered primarily on conservation toward one that also emphasizes sustainable economic value, restoration, and climate resilience. Although forest cover remains exceptionally high and the country continues to maintain its carbon-negative status, pressures from infrastructure development, land-use change, and economic modernization are gradually reshaping forest landscapes and the role of the forestry sector in the national economy. In response, Bhutan is promoting sustainable forest management, value-added forest industries, and landscape restoration through initiatives such as the Restore Bhutan program, reflecting a broader strategy to balance ecological integrity with resilient economic growth and long-term environmental stability.
