AFoCO Facilitates Study Visit for GCF Representatives to Explore Forest Management Practices in the Republic of Korea

Republic of Korea — On 24 June, the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO) organized a study visit for representatives of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to introduce the Republic of Korea’s forest management system and provide first-hand insight into its forest management institutions and practices. The program brought together representatives from AFoCO and GCF and served as an opportunity to exchange knowledge on sustainable forest management, forest governance, and technical approaches supporting climate-resilient forestry.

Northern Regional Forest Service

The study visit began at the Northern Regional Forest Service, where participants received an overview of Korea’s regional forest administration system. Officials introduced the organizational structure, budget management, and policy framework supporting forest governance and the implementation of national forestry programs.

Mount Gari Leading Forest Management Zone

Participants then visited the Mount Gari Leading Forest Management Zone within the Garisan Forest Management Complex. This site showcased ongoing research into circular forest management models. Supported by the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFoS), the Hongcheon National Forest Management Office, and 62 university researchers, this initiative aims to balance sustainable timber production with ecosystem resilience.

Yongmun Nursery

The final visit took place at Yongmun Nursery, where participants observed Korea’s forest seedling production system. The delegation was introduced to smart greenhouse facilities, automated nursery operations, and quality management practices for producing healthy and resilient planting materials.

The study visit provided GCF representatives with practical insight into Korea’s experience in forest governance, sustainable forest management, and nursery management. It also offered an opportunity to exchange views on the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation and to explore areas for future cooperation.

AFoCO remains committed to bridging regional expertise with international climate finance institutions. This engagement is expected to catalyze further collaborative efforts, enhancing the capacity of member countries to implement robust, climate-resilient forest management practices.
