Kazakhstan’s forestry sector is gradually shifting toward a more restoration- and climate-resilience-oriented management framework, as forests are increasingly recognized as strategic infrastructure for land stability and climate adaptation. Despite relatively low forest cover, environmental pressures such as land degradation, desertification, water system decline, and increasing wildfire risks are shaping national forestry priorities. In response, the government is promoting large-scale afforestation, restoration of degraded lands particularly in the Aral Sea region, and modernization of wildfire and forest governance systems, including the national initiative to plant two billion trees by 2027, reflecting a broader transition toward climate-oriented and restoration-driven forest policy.
