On August 25, Mr. Chencho Norbu, the Executive Director of AFoCO, visited the AFoCO project site in Cempaka Forestry Partnership, Pringsewu Regency, Lampung, Indonesia. Cempaka Forestry Partnership is one of the 3 social forestry sites selected as project sites in Indonesia (the other 2 being Paru Village Forest in Sijunjung Regency, West Sumatra Province and Tuar Tana Community Forest in Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province). The 183 ha site is under the management of Batutegi Protected Forest Management Unit (PFMU) and is composed of 164 community farmers spread across 6 groups.
Participants of the site visit were given an overview of the project and updated on its progress. Participants also had the opportunity to interact with the community farmers of Cempaka during a short discussion on project implementation. The site visit ended with a ceremonial tree-planting ceremony.

The AFoCO regional project, “Facilitating the Participatory Planning of Community-based Forest Management Using GIS and RS Technologies in Forest Resources Management in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand” is a 5-year project that began in 2015. The goal of the project is to contribute to the improvement of forests and forest resources development using GIS and RS technologies, particularly in areas with community settlements.
In Indonesia, AFoCO is collaborating with the Forest Research and Development Center, FOERDIA, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, to implement the project activities, which include participatory workshops on community-based forest management implementation, training courses targeted at improving capacities of stakeholders at the management and community levels, and the preparation and implementation of a CBFM plan.
